MAE STAFF WRITER, DIEGO SANCHEZ SANTOS, 10/14/24
In the small town of Arroyo Grande, Alex, a 17-year-old student, began a new stage in his life by getting his first job in a local cafeteria. Although excited by the opportunity to earn his own money, Alex also knew that he would face the challenge of balancing his work with the demands of high school. Alex had always been a committed student and the idea of adding a job to this busy schedule made him wonder if he would be able to maintain the level of performance in both areas.
At first, everything seemed to be going well in the cafeteria. Alex cleaned tables, helped in the kitchen, and attended to customers. However, as the weeks went by, he realized that long hours at work began to affect his school performance; homework and exams accumulated. Study nights became shorter and shorter due to fatigue. In addition, his friends began to notice that he spent less time with them.
The conflict reached a critical point when Alex failed an important exam. Frustrated and exhausted, he knew he had to do something to prevent his work from costing him his academic performance. Despite the fear of disappointing his boss, Alex decided to talk to him to ask for a change in his schedule. This conversation turned out to be a key moment, Alex was prepared to make difficult decisions that would impact both his work and his studies.
His boss, recognizing Alex’s effort and dedication, offered him a solution to reduce his working hours during the most demanding weeks of school but allow him to work more during the holidays. This allowed Alex to focus on his studies without giving up his first job. From that moment on, with better organization of his time, Alex managed to improve his grades and keep up with his work, demonstrating that balance is key when faced with multiple responsibilities.
The experience not only taught Alex the importance of managing his time but also the value of asking for help when things get difficult. Today he continues to work in the cafeteria and has learned to better balance his school and work life, demonstrating that with perseverance you can achieve everything you set out to do.
