HAITIANS EAT DOGS? HOW RACIST RUMORS HURT IMMIGRANTS FROM HAITI

On September 6, 2024, a message was posted on X that claimed Haitian neighbors in Springfield Ohio had a cat hanging from a tree in their yard to be butchered and eaten. The photo accompanying the post showed a black man holding what appeared to be a Canadian goose by the legs. Despite local authorities’ statements that, “there is no credible information or allegations against Haitians” for committing such acts, the post continues to be shared on social media and was the basis for former President Trump’s argument "In Springfield, they are eating the dogs. The people that came in, they are eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there."
Sadly, this type of hate is common for Haitian immigrants. Daphcarline Alecti is a Haitian immigrant who attends Lincoln High and has experienced this hate directly. She has personally received verbal attacks, has received threats and has been made to feel uncomfortable. She says, “there are many immature children who hear rumors like this and take it seriously.” Daphcarline feels very frustrated by such racism because it seems like it’s getting worse after Trump’s statement.
While I haven’t experienced as much harassment as Daphcarline, I am also enraged by the misinformation about Haitians. I have seen negative comments on news stories, hurtful memes, not so “funny” videos and songs making false accusations publicly. I am most concerned about threats to deport Haitians and how politicians are using this dirty rumor in their favor. All the fuss over misinformation has made me doubt whether to stay. The lack of respect and the use of such dirty rumors is just ugly.
This cyberbullying has enraged me and other classmates. I have spoken with many of my friends, and we plan to give support to those of us who continue suffer harassment.
