GIRLS LACROSSE IS MORE THAN A SPORT
MAE STAFF WRITER, IZAMAR MORA, 9/10/24
About seven years ago two girls went to Lincoln’s athletic director, coach Fai to ask why there wasn’t a lacrosse team at Lincoln. They wanted to play. He informed them that there was never really anyone interested in playing, but that if they could find enough girls, he would find a coach. They found the girls. But when coach Fai couldn’t find a coach, he stepped up and took on the role.
Lacrosse is a team sport with the objective of passing a small ball around between teammates in order to score a goal. Each of the twelve players use a stick with a net at the end of it to pass and catch the ball. One goalie, four defensive players cover the back 75% of the lacrosse, four offensive players cover the front 75%, and three midfielders play the whole field.
Ayleen Valdez, a defensive player for Lincoln described the bond Coach Fai and the current team have established. She said, The team is like a family where everyone gets along and grows with one another by helping each other out.” She noted specifically that the team helps to both improve weakness in play, but also continues to develop strengths.
Lizbeth Santiago recognized her own personal improvements beyond the field. She said, “The team has helped me better myself, it has helped me make new connections and friendships that I cherish deeply.”
While Lacrosse doesn’t get the same recognition as other sports at Lincoln, it’s clear that it is having an impact of the lives of the girls who play. If you want to be part of this family, talk to Coach Fai about joining Girls Lacrosse.
