CARVING HIS OWN PATH: HOW KING DAVID DUNN HANDLES PLAYING FOR HIS DAD
MAE STAFF WRITER, MAR’EYON DEAN, 9/24/24
In many ways King David Dunn is a typical Junior at Lincoln High. He’s a gamer. He likes to go shopping. He likes movies. He likes to be on his phone. He says, “some people know me as the person who doesn’t talk much, but it’s the complete opposite.” But one thing everybody knows is that King is part of a legacy here. His dad is the head football coach.
King definitely feels the pressure of his family’s legacy. The expectations set by his father loom large. And while he wants to follow in his father’s footsteps, he realizes the need to carve his own path.
He grew up watching his brothers thrive under their father’s guidance and King was taking notes. He says, “I watched watches what his brothers deal with and how they handle challenges, so I’m prepared.” He reflects on these lessons and applies theme to his own journey.
“I admire my father’s methods,” King says, and he is aware of the “high expectations” he must live up to. But no one has higher expectations than he has for himself; he refuses to do the bare minimum, pushes himself to “do the best and be the best.”
With the goal of attending the same college his father did, King pushes himself academically as well, working hard to maintain at least a 3.5 GPA. With this desire to excel and his family’s support, we might just see him in the NFL one day.
